Riding A Pontoon Boat Without Worrying About the Weather
If you possess a Pontoon boat or have seriously considered purchasing one, you may have been attracted by the unbeatable combination of cheapness and welcoming casual design compared to larger, costlier boats. There is no better boat that seems more appropriate for fishing, sightseeing, or just enjoying the company of family while floating through small bodies of water. The experience, however, will not be pleasant for long, as the occupants sizzle beneath the rays of the sun or get drowned by rain. If you don’t want your vacation ruined by weather conditions, you will need to buy an overhead canopy, most popularly referred to as a Bimini top.
The name of this unassuming device is derived from the group of islands in the westernmost district of the Bahamas, {whose fishermen are credited with its creation to shield them from the elements}. The present Bimini top comes in a substantial variety of shapes, sizes and colors, though there are certain important factors to help narrow down the make of Bimini top that you want. The two critical properties that you must determine when buying a Bimini top are: (a) the dimensions of the top, (b) the material of the fabric.

Selecting the correct Bimini top fabric concerns finding the proper balance of cost versus strength. Cotton-based tops are the cheapest, made of material similar to canvas, and are an acceptable choice if you’re strapped for cash and limit your pontoon boat excursions. Cotton tops are not resistant to ultraviolet (UV) rays, susceptible to leaking, and may tear apart over time unless put away safely. Vinyl tops are a very popular choice since they are simple to clean, tough enough to provide protection from the rain, and are normally resistant to UV rays and fungal rot. Acrylic and treated polyester tops are the most expensive, but also quite formidable, highly resistant to scratching and fading, and strong enough for constant outdoor activity. For the pontoon enthusiast, these tops are capable of enduring repeated abuse from the elements. If you plan to pilot your pontoon boat out at least once a week in rough conditions, acrylic and polyester would be your best option.
