Silver Remains Top Car Color Choice for 2009

Silver has remained the favored new car color choice in North America for the ninth consecutive year. Survey results show that about 57% of new cars are either silver of black in color.

This (2009) is the ninth consecutive year that silver has been at the top when it comes to car color choice. But the silver that is sprayed onto cars these days is much more advanced than the paint used when it began to become popular. Paint technology and car spraying techniques and systems are constantly improving enabling car makers to offer ever increasing ranges of colors for their vehicles.

Silver, black and white are clearly car buyers favorites but Ford have had some success with more vibrant colors including Molten Orange and Grabber Blue. There is a new, compact Ford Fiesta due to arrive in the US in 2010 and this will be made avaiable in a range of much brighter, vibrant colors including bright green and red as well as the popular silver, black and white.

The strong European small car market tends to have more color variety with around 37% of small vehicles sporting red, green, brown or blue paintwork.

Car makers have also turned their attention to making their car interiors more attractive by using varied accent colors. New paints are being introduced that include glass particles that make the paint shimmer and shine.

There are those who believe that color can have a distinct psychological effect. For example, red has been found to stimulate the body and mind to increase circulation whereas blue has been believed to provide a soothing effect on illnesses and pain. There is some debate among psychologists regarding the effects of color therapy.

It’s interesting to note that around 15 years ago the most popular color was green with only 1% of new cars in silver. Color fashions clearly change over time making it near impossible to predict the next hot color.
