HARD DRIVES

ITUNES/EXTERNAL HAR DDRIVE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!?

i just bought a HP Simple Save 1 TB external hard drive, and want to move my itunes library on to it.
but i dont know how to…i tryed draging the file to the hard drive but that dident work.
I want to make it so itunes will only work when the external hard drive is connected,so if the hard drive isnt connected it wont work….i hope that makes sence…

If you wanted to, you could put your OS on an external HDD and run the computer like that…not that I’d recommend it. I have run with 95%+ of my games library and several System level programs on an External. Until I bought a 500gb HDD, with the exception of Civ IV: Beyond the Sword, *everything* was on the external. The only reason it wasn’t…was because it wouldn’t run with it installed there (damnable annoying DRM program!).

Firstly…I want to caution you…I do NOT have iTunes…I never WILL have iTunes…I prefer my music DRM free, and not having to pay the full cost for it everytime I want to migrate it or put it on a new device. So, take this as you will…

Open the iTunes program itself, and change the location of the library to a file on the external drive. This should cause the program to route all new purchases to the new file on the external drive.

For the music you *now* have on the HDD…try right clicking on the music folder(s) themselves, not the iTunes, and either select “Copy” or “Move To”… For anything else (and that is what you are asking for), you’d have to re-install iTunes to the external HDD.
Instead of what you’re trying to do, might I suggest you open MSCONFIG and de-select iTunes to start on start-up? What this will do is iTunes will remain OFF and will not run until YOU decide to start it and listen to tunes, watch/download vids, or buy music. Then, when you close the program out, it will remain off until you open it again.

However, for the sake of the safety of your wallet and bank ballance…contact Apple, or go to the iTunes forums (I presume they have one) before you do anything about moving stuff and ask there!
