What format should my external hard drive be in so that it is compatible with both mac and pc?
I recently bought a 2tb external hard drive and I’m going to be switching from a PC to a mac soon. On the back of the hard drive it says that its formatted for NTFS and i know that’s not compatible with mac. So what do i format it as to allow it to read/write from and to a mac and a PC as well. The PC is running windows XP by the way.
DO NOT reformat that drive! Even Microsoft, who developed FAT-32 in the first place, no longer recommends it. Stick with NTFS (Apple’s driver is the issue here) and get the free NTFS-3G driver, link below. The answer about MacFuse is not correct. MacFuse is not needed with the recent versions of NTFS-3G, and it wasn’t a complete solution even back when it was needed.
{FAT-32 is a DOS format, but technically, NTFS is not. FAT-32 is inefficient and does not allow use of files larger than 4GB.}
