Which do you use and prefer?

Firewire is the fastest for external HDD.

eSata is the fastest for internal HDD.

@CCIE Prodigy: “USB runs at 480 mbps Firewire runs at 400 mbps and eSATA runs at 3 gbps which is 3072 mbps so eSATA is your best choice.”

You are correct however slightly misleading for those wanting an external HDD.

Even though USB has a Higher mbps, differences in the architecture of the two interfaces have a huge impact on the sustained throughput.

Shown in the following tests usb vs Firewire:
Read Test:
* 5000 files (300 MB total) FireWire was 33% faster than USB 2.0
* 160 files (650MB total) FireWire was 70% faster than USB 2.0

Write Test:
* 5000 files (300 MB total) FireWire was 16% faster than USB 2.0
* 160 files (650MB total) FireWire was 48% faster than USB 2.0

In sustained throughput FireWire is faster than USB 2.0.
