Hot Plug
Laptop recently the a/c adater plug gets burning hot?

I have a sony vaio laptop and recently i realize the a/c adater plug that goes in to the laptop gets really hot, really really hot. It slightly burns the glue in the plug. What is wrong with it? Is it the a/c adapter or something in the computer.

That sounds like one of two things: either you have a break in the power cord and it’s shorting near the barrel, or you’ve got a short in the jack itself (inside the laptop). I’ve worked at a PC repair shop for the past couple of years, and in my experience it’s more likely to be the cord than the laptop.

If possible, you would need a second power adapter to test it, one that you know works fine. If you still have the same problem, then the jack is bad. If so, then send the laptop back to Sony for warranty repair (if it’s still under warranty and only AFTER you’ve backed up all your data). If it’s out of warranty, you’re looking at a repair somewhere between $200 and $500, depending on what’s available in your area. If they have to or offer to replace the motherboard, you’re looking at a few hundred dollars more.

[edit] I just realized, if there’s a short in the cord then it may still get hot even without being connected to the laptop. If that’s the case, then you know the cord is bad. Otherwise, you’ll need to test it with another adapter.

Best wishes (I hope it’s just the cord).
