HARD DRIVES

i need help installing windows xp on a laptop harddrive using a usb to ide adapter using my pc to install?

i have a usb to 2.5″ ide converter cable and want to install xp on a laptop that doesn’t have a cdrom. so i want to use my pc (with cdrom) to install it. can someone please help with the correct way to do this. will be eternally grateful..
the laptop’s hdd is actually out of the laptop, and is plugged into this cable and then that is to plug into my pc or other laptop w/ a cdrom drive. hope this helps.

You’ll not be able to do an “install” through the USB port. There’s special software to emulate usb disks to look like C:/ drives, but it’s specialized and expensive. The problem is Windows’ built in install system. It will only recognize USB devices as add-ins, rather than primary disks. (the c drive having the O.S. is needed to “see” usb devices.) The easiest method would be to get a tray adapter, to use your laptop harddrive as a regular desktop harddrive, then install windows onto it that way.–
The adapter you’ve got will let ya access the hard drive through USB. I actually meant an adapter, to plug directly into the IDE connection on your desktop’s mother board. To get the motherboard of the desktop to “see” it as the primary drive. This, with the cd rom, would let you install to the laptop.
