Need help with boot error from a 300GB SATA HDD attached to a Silicon Image Sil3112ACT144 SATA controller.?

I have a Maxtor Maxline III, Model 7L300S0, 300GB SATA150 hard drive attached to an Aopen AX4R Plus motherboard with a Silicon Image SATA controller (Sil3112ACT144) on it. I’ve freshly installed Windows XP Pro on it, and it successfully loaded up to windows the first time or two, but now it either hangs on a black screen after P.O.S.T. or it gives me this error:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:

Windowssystem32configsystem

You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the
original Setup CD-ROM. Select ‘r’ at the first screen to start repair.

Has anyone else had this same problem with the same motherboard SATA controller, but a different hard drive and have solved it? Or does anyone have any idea of how to fix this?

just reinstall windows, and if it happens again you have a bad hard drive or controller…

if you try swapping out the controller with a known working control and it happens again, the problem isn’t following the control. continue on by trying a different drive of the same type, problem still happens, you know it’s not that specific drive.
