How can i get a Samsung and a Maxtor Hard Drive to work together?
I have a Samsung SATA HD250HJ Hard Drive and a Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 8 40GB IDE Hard Drive.
Here are the Specs: http://www.samsung.com/au/consumer/pc-peripherals/hard-disk-drive/35-sata-hdd/HD250HJ/index.idx?pagetype=prd_detail&tab=specification
http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?InvtId=6E040L0-NDW-R&cpc=RESX
The Samsung is the HDD that I’m currently using.
The Maxtor is a hard drive that i was using before but it started malfunction.
Can anyone tell me how i can configure them correctly so that the Maxtor can become a slave drive? I’m trying to see if i can recover information from the Maxtor drive.
The SATA and IDE interface are two different types of hard drive connections. SATA has only one device per connection, so there is no “master / slave” setting for SATA drives. The IDE connection supports up to two devices per connection, so they have a “master / slave” settings. When you install a SATA hard drive in a computer, even if you add in a second hard drive, that second hard drive is not automatically a “slave”. The only reason to set an IDE hard drive to “slave” is if you have two devices on the same IDE cable. One device must be “master” and the other device must be “slave”.
So, if you have nothing else connected to that IDE cable, just the one hard drive, set it to be “single” or “master”. It depends on the manufacture of the hard drive how you set it for single IDE device use, but it will be explained on the hard drive itself, in the jumper directions printed on its label, or as labels on the jumper pins. Some IDE drives will have a separate jumper just for “master” and another jumper for “single”, but most have them combined into a “master/single” jumper configuration. Once you do this, and restart the computer, go into the BIOS setup screen and check the hard drives, you should see the SATA drive, and also the IDE drive as “master / single” on IDE port 0. If not, then that drive is probably dead.
If you already have another device on that IDE cable, like a DVD drive, then you must change its jumper to “master” and the IDE hard drive to “slave” or neither one will show up after rebooting. You can also set the hard drive as “master” and the DVD drive to “slave” if you wish, it doesn’t matter to Windows, its just a way to allow the IDE channel to address each device without getting them confused.
In short, the “master / slave” setting only applies to IDE devices, and its only there to prevent the IDE port from sending data to the wrong device on the IDE port. It has nothing to do with what drive is “dominate” in the computer when your booting Windows.
