What To Know Before Buying An MP4 Player

A MP4 player is really the next generation of the MP3 player. The MP 3 player was released in the early 90’s. The MP 3 was and is an audio format portable player. It could not compress videos just music. The MP3 and MP4 are a form of computer file.

Before the MP 3, people had small tape players or small radios attached to their belt or in their pocket. Today it is hard to believe that people had to use those things. Inevitably the batteries didn’t last very long, the reception was poor or the item was bulky. Next came the MP3 player. Because of its small size, it appealed to joggers or people engaged in other forms of exercise. Unlike a small tape player, it didn’t use a tape but is based on, like all computer programs, algorithms.

As with any other new and improved device, there is always the next generation. The MP4 player is the next generation. Its original name was MPEG-4 Part 14 or MP4 for short. Apple QuickTime format is at the base of the MPED-4 design. It was released in the early 2000’s. MP 4 handles audio, video and text images. MP4 supports quite a few different formats.

Apple’s IPod was Apple’s brand name of the MP3 player and is used to play audio files in the MP3 or ACC (Advanced Audio Coding) format. They helped to make the MP4 really attractive, just like the hottest new cell phones. Google video used MP 4 so users could download videos to their IPods. So MP4 is the format and the MP4 player is the device that you use to listen or view with.

You can stream files over the internet on an MP4 player; pretty cool. Streaming is the delivery of the content. It can be either web server or a media streaming server such as Microsoft’s Advanced Streaming Format or ASF. The old way was a download and play which took a long time and couldn’t be used until the process was complete. Streaming allows the music or video to be heard or seen after a short pause. Again, another generation of computers, so to speak. A media streaming server is similar in the approach as a web server, but the streaming process takes place at the same pace as the compressed audio or video streams. Much quicker and more complete.

Since it’s introduction, the MP4 player has truly advanced. MP4 players are made by many manufacturers. MP4 players, like all portable media players have to comply with certain standards and formats. MP4 players are a bit larger than MP3 players as they have to have a screen so you can watch a video. Like any other portable computer screen, the larger the screen, the more the unit costs. MP4 players may come with high speed USB ports; they may be voice ready or have limited notebook functions. They come with different sized internal memories. Again, the larger, the more cost. With so many choices, the decision of what you want to spend rests with you.
