Should I get a PATA or SATA external drive?
I have an Acer, Aspire 3680, laptop and I’m not sure if it is SATA or PATA. I need to store some data as the disks are close to full. Does it matter if I choose either SATA or PATA external drives?
It doesn’t matter for external drives. SATA’s transfer rate is 1.5 or 3.0 Gbps, while PATA’s is only 1.2 or 0.8 Gbps. However it doesn’t matter because external drives are connected by USB or firewire, which are only 0.480 and 0.400 Gbps, respectively, so the USB or firewire is the bottleneck and not the drive itself.
