What happens when i plug an external hard drive into a HD directv box?

Will I be able to record if i do plug it in to the usb drive of a regular HD Receiver or will it work on my dvr for more room to record?

external hard drives do not record, they only store the files, if your receiver model is capable you will need the correct software upgrade from directv
