Secrets The Pros Use For Training A Puppy Effectively
Learning to train a puppy will be a lot more successful if you record everything you do. I know that sounds very “fuzzy” and lacking substance – don’t glaze over and ignore it, as it will be a big help when you come to review your progress, and will highlight what approaches worked best in the past. Taking notes is a means of recording what has worked well for your puppy, and what area he had difficulty with. And just like anything else in life, preparing a plan is crucial to being successful otherwise you’ll just be spinning your wheels – and getting nowhere.
Looking to the future should really be the first thing you do when you start train a puppy, as it will help a great deal in relocating a young dog or puppy from his established and comfortable home to the insecure and brand new home you’ll be giving him. It is a very stressful and worrying event for a puppy when he is taken away from his mother and siblings, and he is thrust into an entirely new environment with completely alien smells and faces to get used to.
It happens with older dogs to – they can get depressed by all the changes that seem to be taking place in their lives. You need to be constantly reassuring your dog when you move him to a new home; he just sees a new and quite worrying place with none of his friends.
If it is at all do-able, take a few trips to meet your pup while he’s still at his “old place”. He will already know you this way when he moves in with you. The benefit of taking this approach is that when you begin, training your puppy he’ll learn a lot quicker as he’ll already be friends with you. I appreciate this is not always possible so, you can always take a piece of his current house to his new home, like maybe a piece of clothing that he’s slept on, or any other item he recognizes that will help him settle down and get used to being in an alien environment without the familiar smells and faces.
Without doubt, the ideal time to bring home a new dog or puppy is when you will be available to set aside a block of time to spend with him. A summer vacation is perfect, but only if you can plan on being home for the summer. He’ll settle down a lot quicker if you’re there with him 24-7. Spending lots of time with him when he moves in will pay dividends in building your relationship and help the newcomer get over his homesickness blues.
In the same way that we humans make preparations for a new baby, by creating a checklist of things to do and equipment to buy, training your puppy is just the same. Having a different number of legs shouldn’t mean you get less priority.
The perfect place for your new puppy is a cordoned off area in a main living area, and will help when you start house training your puppy too as accidents can easily be cleaned up off the tile floors of these rooms. Where possible, in the kitchen makes great puppy real estate because we spend a lot of our time in these rooms, as this helps your puppy get accustomed to his new home.
Your puppy had lots of friends and familiar faces at his old home. Having left them behind he will feel lonely and insecure and it will be up to you to compensate for the absence of his siblings. But equally important – he can’t be allowed to live by his own rules for his first few days in your home and then lay down rules that prevent him doing those things when you start training him. Puppy house training is something you start from day one – just start with the easy stuff.
Being permissive in this respect is not being kind, because it only confuses the puppy. Everything you apply to training a puppy apply to the adopted adult dog as well. Adult dogs can also suffer from homesickness when you move them. It’s not only puppies. Introducing a new dog to your family requires lots of patience, training and consistency. But you’ll get your just rewards with a happy and well behaved dog.
