Multiple Web Servers?

I’m into web design and since picking up PHP and MySQL, I understand that it’s a server side script. Instead of just loading my site onto a webhost that supports PHP, I’m thinking about starting up my own servers. However, I’m curious how many simultaneous users one server can support. Additionally, how would you connect multiple servers together, like Facebook and Google do with thousands of them? What products would you recommend to build a good server? IBM and HP have some info on their websites, but I’m kind of lost. They have the basic servers, but also extra hard drive system racks. Do those connect using regular SATA or SAS connections or is their some other way it works? Help please?
Also, whats the different between different server forms and storage forms? What’s better?

It depends on the server, software, and the web application. An average server can handle thousands of concurrent connections, with a general maximum user load many times that.

/* Additionally, how would you connect multiple servers together, like Facebook and Google do with thousands of them? *

Two ways, clustering and load balancing. Clustering allows a group of servers to act as one. Load balancing simply shifts requests between servers to prevent any single server from having too high of a load. Enterprise sites usually have a load balanced web server system with a database cluster.

/*What products would you recommend to build a good server? IBM and HP have some info on their websites, but I’m kind of lost. They have the basic servers, but also extra hard drive system racks. Do those connect using regular SATA or SAS connections or is their some other way it works? *

It all depends. Most low end servers use SATA or SAS. Higher end servers use fiber channel and some other proprietary connection technologies. You’ll also see quite a bit of Ultra320 SCSI in older servers. Server grade hard drives tend to run at a much higher speed. Mine all use 15k RPM disks, this is twice as fast of a rotation as a desktop hard drive. Storage racks use a variety of connections.

/*Also, whats the different between different server forms and storage forms? What’s better?*

Form factor does not make a difference. Rack mount servers use designations of 1U, 2U, 4U, etc. This simply indicates how tall the unit is in increments of approximately 1.5 inches. I prefer 1 or 2U rackmount servers. These normally have 2/3 for 1U and six drive bays for 2U. I’ve found that cooling is slightly more efficient on a 2U system. It allows for better, vertically mounted fans behind the storage array. Towers are just towers. Other than the higher grade of hardware inside, they are not much different than a normal desktop. They do usually have locks and hot swappable drives on the front though.
