What are the differences of IDE and SATA?

Which is better an IDE or SATA (external hard disk drives)? What are its differences?

PATA drives are limited to a transfer speed of 133MB per second. SATA drives are limited to 300MB per second.

Since external, you also need to consider port speeds. USB2 is limited to 60MB per second, while eSATA is limited to 300MB per second.

SATA is faster, particularly if you have eSATA.

(Note that I’m referencing the top speeds only, disregarding SATA150, PATA16,33,66,100. Also judging on rated speeds of the technology. A wise consumer should investigate specific drives, as some will read/write faster than others regardless of published speed ratings.)
