Home networking on XP, how to?

Basically i have two desktop PCs and i wish to be able to pull files from one to another without using USB disks etc, I’d like to make a home network Between the two PCs I’ve tried before but i only failed in doing it.
Could anyone give me a surefire way to do this?

There are several ways
1. The simplest-
Get an Ethernet CROSSOVER cable. (not a patch cable)
connect the two machines
manually set the ip addresses of the two machines
Machine 1- 192.168.0.10
Machine 2- 192.168.0.20
Set Netmask both to 255.255.255.0
Make sure file and print sharing is enabled on both
make sure at least one folder is shared on both
make sure the work group name is the same on both

2. A better way – Get a switch (about $20 at an office supply store)
Get 2 Ethernet PATCH cords
Plug the machines into the switch and power up the switch
manually set the ip addresses of the two machines
Machine 1- 192.168.0.10
Machine 2- 192.168.0.20
Set Netmask both to 255.255.255.0
Make sure file and print sharing is enabled on both
make sure at least one folder is shared on both
make sure the work group name is the same on both

3. The best way – Get a router
Get 2 Ethernet PATCH cords
Plug the machines into the LAN side of the router and power up the router
Make sure both machines are set to obtain IP address automatically
Make sure file and print sharing is enabled on both
make sure at least one folder is shared on both
make sure the work group name is the same on both

All three methods will let you transfer files
