Vantec Nexstar
My MacBook stopped recognizing my external hard drive?

I have no idea what happened and what to do about this.

I bought a Vantec NexStar 3 external hard drive about 4 months ago to keep files from my old laptop once it died. For the next 4 months it worked totally fine, no complaints whatsoever. But a couple of days ago it stopped working and I don’t know what’s changed.

When I plug it into my MacBook, I can hear the fan start spinning, and the blue light lights up and is constant. But after about a minute, the light starts beeping. I can still hear the fan going. But at no point does the drive show up on my computer.

I tried plugging it into another computer and the exact same thing happened.

Thanks for any suggestions

If your drive isn’t even popping up in your file explorer then you could have a real problem. Chances are the drive was either dropped or you deinterfaced or powered down the drive during a I/O process. Your first coarse of action woudl be to remove the drive from the enclosure and install it on a available native controller, usually this is standard IDE or for the super thin ones (they usually use 2.5 inch drives) 2.5″ IDE. Once attached to a native controller you should be able to see the drive even if its a failed device at which point you would use a disk utility to check the filesystem and disk surface for errors. If you find errors then most utilities have a means to repair the damage, if its serious then you may be lookign at a damaged drive. SOME and I mean a very select few drives are SMART drives and use the WD SMART technology to control the spinup and running of the hard disk, these devices can get out of whack sometimes and require a proper WINDOWS shutdown to write themselves, I’ve tried fixing the problem in OSX and Ubuntu Linux but it simply doesn’t work.
